Artefact Two - Lighting (Part 2)

Previously the image has brightened up slightly. However the light is very strong and is not illuminating the room. For these light rays to bounce and spread around the area 'Final Gather' Needs to be enabled in the 'Indirect Illumination' tab on the render rollout (Once again F10 needs to be pressed on the keyboard to find this).

In the book 'Rendering With Mental Ray & 3DS Max' By Joep Van Der Steen - Final Gather is described 'as shooting rays inside a scene originating from its source...these rays collect the brightness information of the scene so the actual colour of the pixels rendered can be determind. So in theory the higher the amount of rays produced will give more colour and sharpness to the scene. Also the diffuse bounce at the bottom enables the rays to bounce off the surface of objuects and hit the next surface. This will allow the scene to have more brightness and below will show the results of these changes.

Above the image have been left on the same preset level (low) however the image on top has a diffuse bounce of 1 and the image on the bottom has a diffuse bounce of 10. You can see that the image on the bottom has a brighter look to it and this can especially be seen on the floor on the right of the image. So the diffuse bounce test is complete and now for the change in the number of rays.

Above - This time the bounce setting has remained the same for both images (set at 1) and the preset levels have been changed. The image on top has a low preset (the number of rays is set at 150) and the image on the right has a preset set on high (500 rays). The shadowed areas on the high preset seem to be more natural however again on the bottom of the image the light areas seem to be too overwhelming.

A poll was created to ask people which of the two scenes felt like the lighting in the scene was realistic.

Looking at the shaded areas and where the light seems to be physically follow the path of real world light would people conclude the same as me?

Thirteen people were asked and the majority went in favour of the scene on the left.
