Artefact One - Mapping (Part 3)

The next part of the investigation will be focused on the wooden texture.

The top texture is the initial colour map which can be seen in the renders.
The middle is the bump map where depth can be visualised and the lower is the specular map. Note these are black and white, 3DS MAX will perceive the dark black areas as depth/shadows and the lighter grey as highlights when being applied.

Below is a screenshot of
the mapping section of 3DS MAX. You can see which maps are used and also the amount. An example would be if the 'bump' amount was set to 100 than the dark grey areas of the map will show up very deep in the final render.

Now that the scene is complete the next objective is to optimize the textures so that the memory size can be as small as possible compared to a suitable compromise in the final render of the scene. In other words we want the scene to look good for a tiny file size!

For starting off, the floor will be looked at. The texture to begin with looks good but the file size and dimension has not been altered from when the image was taken. The initial texture file size was 2.1MB and also 2560x1878- Far too much just for a simple texture and especially if the scene were to be much more complex with dozens of textures.

Below The wood texture has had it's first alter in dimension to 1024x512.

Using Adobe Photoshop the textures have been changed into appropriate dimension (power of two) and the file sizes decrease as the dimension does. The next few images below are the result of this.

Below the floors texture has been decreased to 512x256. You can see that the grain of the wood has become less define than the previous 1024x512 and also the nearest wood gaps have started to blur slightly.

The final dimension change was 256x128 and by far the worst result. The wood has lost all of it's initial grain and the gaps have become overwhelmed with blurring. The realistic result is not there however this 'plastic' looking wood may be good in a cartoon type scene.
